Summary
Through indoor simulation experiments, we studied the formation and consumption rate of methane (CH4) in the Xiangxi Bay section of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGR). The results show that the formation and consumption rate of CH4 is significantly positively correlated with temperature. The yield of CH4 is reduced by the increase in its potential oxidation rate. In the surface deposits, the CH4 oxidation product accounted for 51.8% of the total product, and this value even reached 77.4% at 356C. In addition, the oxidation rate of methane on the water surface ranges from 1.26 to 4.65 mg/(m2h), and the average and maximum oxidation rates are 46.7% and 73.9% under the conditions of 30 m deep water and 356 C, respectively. Therefore, under the average water level (160 m) of the Three Gorges reservoir area, the oxidation value of methane may increase by 41.04 mg / (m2h), while on the water surface, most of the methane produced by sediments can be oxidized.
